Most blogs fail for a simple reason: they answer questions nobody is asking. You can fix that without guessing, running a big ad budget, or hiring an agency — the questions your customers type into Google are sitting in free tools you probably already have access to.

This guide walks through the specific places to look, in order of how reliable and how free they are, so you can build a list of blog topics that are tied to real search demand instead of your own assumptions about what’s interesting.

<button

Quick Answer

Pull the actual search queries people use to find your site from Google Search Console, expand that list with Google’s Autocomplete and “People Also Ask” suggestions, then cross-check demand and phrasing with a free tool like AnswerThePublic, AlsoAsked, or Google Keyword Planner. Prioritize topics that show real search volume and match a question your sales or support team hears often.

Start With Queries You’re Already Getting (Even Without Ranking)

Google Search Console is the single best free source because it shows queries real people used when your site appeared in search results — not guesses, actual behavior. Go to Performance > Search Results, sort by Impressions, and look for queries where you’re showing up but getting few clicks or ranking outside the top 10. Those are topics Google already thinks you’re somewhat relevant for; a dedicated blog post can push you onto page one. Filter for question words (“how,” “what,” “why,” “best,” “vs”) to surface queries that map naturally to a blog post rather than a product page.

If you don’t have much search history yet (a new site or new domain), skip ahead to the tools below and come back to Search Console once you have a few months of data — it only gets more useful over time.

Next, mine Google itself. Type a core topic or product term into the Google search bar and note the Autocomplete suggestions — these are drawn from real, frequent searches. Then run the same search and scroll to the “People Also Ask” box partway down the results page; click a few questions to expand new related ones, which reveals a chain of follow-up questions real searchers had. At the bottom of the results page, “related searches” gives you another batch of phrasings for the same intent.

For a faster, organized version of that same signal, use a free tool built for it. AnswerThePublic visualizes autocomplete-style questions and prepositions (who, what, how, for, vs, near) around a seed keyword and offers a limited number of free searches per day before requiring a paid plan. AlsoAsked does something similar but focuses specifically on scraping Google’s real “People Also Ask” data into a visual question map, also with a free tier and low-cost paid plans. Google Trends is useful as a sanity check — it won’t give you volume, but it shows whether interest in a topic or phrasing is rising, falling, or seasonal, and it will show related and rising queries you may not have thought of.

If you want actual search volume numbers, Google Keyword Planner (inside Google Ads, free to use even without running ads) shows a volume range and related keyword ideas for any seed term or your own website’s URL.

Go Beyond Google: Ask the People Who Already Talk to Customers

Search tools show what strangers type into Google, but your own team already hears customer questions every day. Ask sales and customer support for the questions they get asked repeatedly — those are proven topics with an audience that already exists, and they often convert better than generic search traffic because they map directly to buying objections or points of confusion.

Check community sites where your customers hang out: Reddit threads and subreddits related to your industry, Quora questions, niche forums, and Facebook or LinkedIn groups. Look at the questions people post and how they’re phrased — that phrasing often differs from what shows up in keyword tools and can reveal topics those tools miss entirely.

Look at competitors’ blogs and their comment sections, and check what questions show up under their YouTube videos or social posts if they have any. You’re not copying their content — you’re confirming that a topic has enough demand that a competitor already invested in covering it, then looking for an angle or gap they left out.

<button

Tips and Common Mistakes

Prioritize by intent, not just volume. A lower-volume query where the searcher is clearly ready to buy (“best for small business”) is often more valuable than a high-volume, top-of-funnel query that rarely converts.

Group similar queries into one post instead of writing a thin article for every single phrasing — Google already understands that “how to find blog topics” and “how to find blog post ideas” are the same intent, and one comprehensive post will outrank several thin ones.

Don’t rely on a single tool. Search Console shows what you already partially rank for, autocomplete and PAA show live search behavior, and your sales team shows what actually drives revenue — each source fills a gap the others miss.

Revisit this process every few months. Search behavior shifts with seasons, product launches, and industry news, so a topic list built once a year will go stale.

Blog topic research FAQs

What’s the fastest free way to find blog topics customers search for?

Google Search Console’s Performance report is the fastest starting point if your site has any search history, since it shows real queries people already used to find you. If you’re starting from scratch, Google Autocomplete and the “People Also Ask” box on a search results page take minutes to check and cost nothing.

Do I need a paid tool like AnswerThePublic or AlsoAsked?

No — both offer a free tier with a limited number of searches per day, which is enough for occasional topic research. A paid plan is worth it mainly if you’re doing this at scale, such as researching topics for many clients or a large content calendar.

How do I know if a topic is worth writing about?

Check that it shows measurable interest in Google Trends or a volume range in Keyword Planner, matches a real question your sales or support team hears, and isn’t already thoroughly covered by a top-ranking competitor with no gap left for you to fill.

Should I write about topics with no clear search volume?

Sometimes — if the topic came directly from a recurring customer question or sales objection, it can still be worth covering even without strong search-tool data, since it serves prospects during the buying process, not just organic search traffic.
